Gerald King, Artist and Riverdale Park Resident
In 2011, in honor of Gerald King and his life-long work to cultivate fine art in his home of Riverdale Park, the Gerald King High School Artist Fellowship was established. Granted by the Riverdale Park Arts Council, this award currently provides $250 in art supplies, mentorship with a local artist, and a one-year membership in RPAC.
About Gerald King:
Gerald A. King was the owner and director of the Atelier Royal art studio in Riverdale Park, MD. For over 30 years, Gerald King was intimately involved with cultivating fine art in Riverdale from his Atelier Royal (named after his father and artist Royal King). Mr. King produced countless paintings and drawings as part of several series of historical, natural environment, and local Riverdale scenes. Mr. King captured the Riverdale community through its landmarks, social activities, and relevant culture, past and present. Published in books, magazines and the Riverdale Park Town-Crier, Gerald’s images and scenes from historic 1700-1810 Riverdale through the 20th and 21-century illustrated the transformation of Riverdale Park and the surrounding area. His diverse visual body of work ranged from researching, visualizing, and capturing rural and farm life at the Calvert Mansion through to modern Riverdale entertainment and day-to-day life
In the 1990s, he frequented the “Music Junction” with sketchpad in hand for weekly sketching vignettes of the various musicians, performers, and the audience. The town square, river scenes and basin, and antique homes and residence were fair game for Gerald’s imaginative and assertive artistic prowess. He regularly set-up plein-air easel and canvas throughout Riverdale Park’s borders; participated in all art-related fairs, festivals, cultural tours, and fundraisers; and generously contributed his time and art expertise to art venues, talks, and presentations at the Calvert Mansion and surrounding areas.
