Vintage Vehicles Sought For Arts Show Competition

RIVERDALE PARK, MD., April 20, 2014 – The Riverdale Park Arts Council invites owners and drivers of vintage vehicles – cars, trucks and motorcycles – to bring their rides to the sixth annual live music and arts celebration in Town Center at the MARC train station May 4, 11 am to 5 pm. Riverdale Park’s World of Wheels is the latest addition to ArtsFest2014 and is inspired by the rave reception last year to Clarke Bedford’s art car Vanadu, his intriguing Gothic art barn on wheels. Within days of last year’s festival where he and his ride were the most photographed artist and work, the Hyattsville artist drove to Texas where he claimed “First Place” at the Houston Art Car Parade in the daily driver category. Clarke Bedford has again been invited to park on the Queensbury Road sidewalk again this year. And so have dozen other motoring enthusiasts. We’ve attached an application form to make free sign-ups easy.

We are also assembling a judging panel of experts who know cars, trucks and motorcycles including Joe Howard, an avid automobile enthusiast and collector who has owned numerous classic imported and domestic vehicles. The son of an auto mechanic whose parents met in 1960 at Royal Motors Chrysler-Plymouth in Washington, D.C., Joe says he owes his very existence to the automobile industry. His family's collection includes a 1966 Buick Special convertible, 1969 Mercury Cougar convertible, 1975 Plymouth Gran Fury, 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, 1983 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Daytona 500 Pace Car Edition, and a 1990 Ford Mustang LX 5.0. Modern classics in the garage include a 2003 Ford Mustang GT convertible, 2008 Buick LaCrosse Super and 2009 Harley-Davidson Sportster.

When not playing with these toys, Joe is Managing Editor for Light & Medium Truck magazine, a business publication for commercial fleet managers produced by the American Trucking Associations. He is married and has one daughter, who also plays with cars.

Joe will be joined on the judge’s stand by Patrick Welch who collects wheels by the fleet. As owner of DC Rent-A-Wreck, he also has a personal collection of vintage rides including a restored 1979 Lincoln Continental, a four-door 1967 Ford Thunderbird, and an assortment of Ford and John Deere tractors built during the Roosevelt Administration era.

Owners are encouraged to complete and return registration forms by email to beat the May 2 deadline.

All News WTOP personality David Burd will emcee ArtsFest2014. The event is held in Town Center, 4650 Queensbury Road, Riverdale Park, MD 20737
